BTC Market Update — August 7, 2026
TLDR: Bitcoin is trading around $64,700–$65,000, roughly 48% below its all-time high of ~$126,200 (Oct 2025) and down ~45% year-over-year. The dominant news flow is the Coldcard hardware wallet exploit, with an attacker sweeping ~1,816 BTC (~$114M) from 5,200+ addresses since July 30 due to a firmware flaw dating to 2021. Sentiment is at rock bottom, Fear & Greed sits in "Extreme Fear" (~24) with persistent ETF outflows. Contrarian logic says moments of maximum pessimism like this are historically when the best long-term entries appear, but it's a principle, not a guarantee, and it's not financial advice.

The Coldcard exploit, what happened
A series of address sweeps began July 30, hitting bitcoin held in wallets whose seeds were generated by a flawed March 2021 Coldcard firmware build, it routed seed generation to a predictable software randomizer instead of the hardware chip's secure one, making private keys reproducible offline.
Across four waves, the attacker moved an estimated 1,816 BTC (~$114M) from 5,200+ addresses. Single-key setups were hit; no multisig wallets appear affected.
Coinkite shipped emergency firmware and urged users to regenerate seeds on patched devices and move funds immediately. In the fourth wave, the attacker used replace-by-fee, meaning victims who spotted their coins in the mempool could outbid the attacker to rescue funds.
Important distinction for the investment thesis: this is a self-custody vendor failure, not a Bitcoin protocol failure. The chain itself functioned normally throughout.
The contrarian angle
This is the moment investor morale is at its lowest, extreme fear readings, bleeding ETF flows, and a headline-grabbing security disaster shaking confidence in self-custody. Historically, these are exactly the conditions under which patient, long-term investors have been rewarded for buying: "be greedy when others are fearful." Nobody can call the bottom, and contrarian signals can stay painful for a while, but if your horizon is years rather than weeks, deep despair is where the best risk/reward has tended to live. Size positions accordingly, only deploy what you can afford to have tied up, and (given this week's news) take custody security as seriously as entry timing.
